Yeast infections are very common in women of all ages, more so during the childbearing years. They can be caused by all sorts of things. For instance, wearing tight clothes, nylon underwear or even using certain medications such as birth control pills and antibiotics can be the cause. Usually the first sign is a slight itchiness in the region of the vagina. Fortunately, there are several over the counter products and other treatments that can fight yeast infection.
One method to fight yeast infection at home is to use apple cider vinegar on the infected area. Dab the infected area with cotton wool that has the soaked in vinegar. If this should lead to stinging, it can be mixed with a little crushed garlic. The garlic leaves an odor but it can be managed by mixing in a little water.
Yogurt is another option. You’ll need about a teaspoon or so of plain yogurt, which you apply right on the affected area or your can dip a tampon with the yogurt first before inserting it. This must be put on twice each day until the infection goes away. Be sure the container of yogurt used for this purpose is clearly marked and separate from other food in the fridge.
You can mix together olive leaf and grapefruit seed extracts with water and, using a cotton ball, apply it to the area where the yeast infection is located. Raw garlic juice can also be helpful. Using your fingers, apply the garlic juice over the area of infection.
Women should remember that Candida causes yeast infections, yet Candida is ordinarily present in the body. The problem occurs when there is an overgrowth of Candida, so absent certain symptoms such as burning and itchiness, you most likely do not have a yeast infection. Treatment may not be necessary and a slight problem may resolve itself without any outside interference.
In addition to yeast infection being extremely treatable, it is also very preventable. The most effective method is to eat yogurt every day, which will help make sure a yeast overgrowth does not occur. It also helps not to wear tight pants or underpants and to get out of your bathing suit as soon as possible after swimming. It is also important to avoid using douches, feminine sprays, and colored or scented toilet paper or tampons; all of these things can make a yeast infection worse.
If you have a yeast infection, especially a recurring one, you should always consult with your physician. If symptoms flare up when a visit to the doctor is not available, you may want to try some home remedies for relief of symptoms and to fight yeast infection. For pregnant women, treatment differs and it is important to seek medical attention promptly and not attempt to fight yeast infection yourself.
